Arch Linux is a Linux distribution for people who want to build their system exactly the way they want it. It started back in 2002 and has a very different philosophy from most other distros: it gives you a bare minimum base, and you add everything else yourself.
When you install Arch, you don't get a desktop, a browser, or really any apps. You get a terminal and a package manager called Pacman. From there, you choose what you want — which desktop environment, which programs, which services. It takes more work to set up, but the result is a system with nothing you didn't ask for.
Arch is also a "rolling release," which means you don't wait for big version upgrades. You just update regularly, and you always have the latest software. The Arch Wiki is famous for being one of the best documentation resources in the entire Linux world — even people who don't use Arch use the wiki.
The catch is that Arch assumes you're comfortable with the command line and willing to read. Things break sometimes, and you're expected to fix them yourself. But if you want to learn how Linux really works and have full control over your machine, Arch is a fantastic choice. It's not for everyone, but for the right person, it's exactly right.
