Deepin is a Linux distribution made by a Chinese company called Deepin Technology, based in Wuhan. It started back in 2004 as Hiweed Linux, and over the years it has grown into one of the most popular Linux systems from China, with over 80 million downloads worldwide.

What really makes Deepin stand out is how it looks. Most Linux systems feel a bit technical, but Deepin has its own desktop environment called DDE, and it’s genuinely one of the best-looking Linux desktops out there. The interface reminds people of Windows 11 or macOS, with a clean taskbar, smooth animations, and a lot of polish. If you’re coming from Windows, it feels familiar right away.

Deepin also comes with a bunch of its own apps pre-installed, like a music player, video player, screenshot tool, and a software store. For Chinese users, it has great support for things like Chinese input methods and even a compatibility layer called deepin-wine that lets you run some Windows apps like QQ or WeChat. The app store makes installing software really easy, which is a nice change from hunting around for packages.

That said, it’s not without controversy. There have been concerns about privacy and security over the years, with reports of telemetry being sent without clear disclosure. Some other Linux communities, like openSUSE, have stopped supporting Deepin’s desktop environment due to security concerns. It’s also not as lightweight as some other distros, and while it runs well on most hardware, very old machines might struggle a bit.

Overall, Deepin is a solid choice if you want a beautiful, easy-to-use Linux system that feels comfortable coming from Windows. Just be aware of the privacy discussions if that matters to you.
